According to recent news sources, a Mississippi grand jury declined to charge Carolyn Bryant Donham in August 2022 after she was suspected of lying to investigators about the events surrounding Emmett Till’s death.
The decision not to indict Donham came amid mounting cries for justice for Till, as well as the Black Lives Matter movement and renewed national focus on problems of racial justice and Police brutality.

According to a recent Heavy report, Bryant is thought to be living in the Raleigh, North Carolina, area; however, her current age is unknown. It is also unknown whether Bryant has made any subsequent public statements or given interviews concerning her role in the Till case.
According to reports, a historian uncovered an unpublished memoir written by Carolyn Bryant Donham in 2022.
Bryant’s recollections of the events leading up to Emmett Till’s death and her opinions on the case’s aftermath are purportedly included in the memoir. In her memoir, Bryant refers to herself as a victim and denies fabricating the tale that led to Till’s murder.
Who Was Emmett? What Happened To Him?
In the summer of 1955, Emmett, who lived in Chicago, was visiting family in Mississippi when he had his fateful meeting with then-20-year-old Carolyn Bryant. Reports from that day differ, but witnesses claimed Emmett whistled at the woman at the Money market she co-owned with her husband.
Four days later, Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam dragged Emmett from his bed in the middle of the night, ordered him into the back of a pickup truck, beat him, shot him in the head, and dumped his body in the Tallahatchie River.
However, after a trial in which Carolyn Bryant testified that Emmett grabbed and verbally threatened her, they were both acquitted of murder by an all-White jury. The jury deliberated for less than one hour.
In a 1956 interview with Look magazine, the guys admitted committing the murder.
Emmett Till’s death drew international attention after a photograph of his mangled body was published in Jet Magazine and circulated worldwide.
His mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, ordered an open-casket burial so that the entire world might witness her son’s injuries and the effects of racial terrorism – a decision that fueled the civil rights movement.
Milam passed away in 1980, while Bryant passed away in 1994. Bryant Donham is a woman in her late eighties.
Bryant Donham was not indicted by a Mississippi grand jury in 2007. According to preserved FBI documents, Milam and Roy Bryant were detained on a kidnapping accusation in 1955, but a grand jury declined to indict them.
“The original court, District Attorney, and investigative materials relating to the 1955 investigation appear to have been lost,” the FBI reported in 2006.
