With a career spanning several decades, Philippe de Broca established himself as a prominent French director, having directed 30 full-length feature films in total. Some of his most successful movies include That Man from Rio (L’Homme de Rio), On Guard (Le Bossu) , and The Man from Acapulco (Le Magnifique).
On 15 March 1933, Philippe de Broca was born in the city of Paris, France. His father worked as a cinema set designer, while his grandfather was a renowned painter who shared his name.
After enrolling in the Paris Photography and Cinematography School (école Vaugirard), he spent several years there studying the art of film. In 1953, he successfully graduated from the institution.
During his military service, Philippe de Broca was a member of the service cinématographique des armées (army film service). He was posted in Germany and Algeria, where he put his filmmaking skills to use by directing and serving as head cameraman on a number of short films.
