According to an interview with The Athletic, Spencer, his twin sister Gaby, and their parents, Larry and Cathy, are members of the Lee family. Larry is Vice President of Finance and administration at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Gaby is also a Coe College student.

Larry Lee’s professional expertise includes finance and administration, and he has spent several years working in higher education. Meanwhile, Cathy Lee has a judo background and was an Olympic alternate. She has also helped to train and encourage her son’s wrestling career. 

Cathy’s Father died lately, but her mother and sister reside in France. Her brothers are spread across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Texas.

She enjoys living in Iowa, particularly in Cedar Rapids. Cathy frequently tells me that this is her favorite of all the locations we’ve lived. The phrase “Iowa Lovely” is accurate. We adore everything about the neighborhood.

Lee finished his rookie year unbeaten with a 49-0 record and a state title at 113 pounds. He finished the season as a sophomore with a 48-0 record and a state title at 120 pounds.

He also fought at 120 pounds as a junior in high school, achieving a perfect 12-0 record and winning state again, giving him a three-time PIAA champion. He also went unbeaten during the regular season as a senior, wrestling at 132 pounds and, finally, 126 pounds.

Lee, the 2019 NCAA and U.S. National champion was set to participate on April 4 in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in State College, Pennsylvania. 

Unfortunately, because of the COVID-19 epidemic, the event was postponed till 2021, along with the Summer Olympics, leaving all qualifiers able to compete the following year. Lee pinned four-time DI All-American Zach Sanders on November 1 at the HWC Open I in his sole match of the year. 

Lee’s participation in the rescheduled U.S. Olympic Team Trials was questioned after he announced he had torn his left ACL, leaving him with no completely functional ACLs because his right one had already been destroyed in his career.
