According to Gainesville Police Lt. Kevin Holbrook, the incident began on GA 365 north of Gainesville and escalated until Cooper started firing a handgun at YMCA Drive.
Multiple shots were fired, with at least two people being hit. Gabriel sustained minor injuries, while 65-year-old Paula Blackwell, who was driving on the highway then, was hospitalized in critical condition.
Holbrook noted that Blackwell was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, highlighting the senseless nature of the incident. Following the shooting, Gabriel drove approximately three miles south to the Imaging Center. There, he called 911.
Meanwhile, Cooper was taken into custody at the scene of the shooting. Shockingly, there was a 2-year-old child in his vehicle at the time of the incident. Thankfully, the child was unharmed and is now in the care of family members.
Cooper has been charged with many offenses, including aggravated battery, criminal attempt to commit murder and aggravated assault. He has been booked at the Hall County Jail and will likely face a lengthy prison sentence if convicted.
The incident caused significant disruption, with GA 365 South near the YMCA across from Lanier Technical College being shut down while authorities investigated. Traffic was diverted until the road reopened shortly after 11 am on Wednesday.
