Nicholas Karol-Chik Arvada was charged with first-degree murder with extreme indifference and will be informed of the accusations in court.

Three 18-year-old suspects were detained in connection with a series of rock-throwing events against automobiles, one of which killed Alexa Bartell, 20.

Deputies in Jefferson County stated Friday that a vehicle they feared was involved in a young woman’s death after a huge rock was hurled at her car Wednesday night — which they allege was part of a crime spree across the Denver metro — was not engaged in the crime spree.

According to the sheriff’s office, the 18-year-old suspects were identified as Joseph Koenig, Nicholas “Mitch” Karol-Chik, and Zachary Kwak, and they were all apprehended at their Arvada homes. 

They also verified that Mark Edward Koenig, Koenig’s Father, was detained overnight for allegedly impeding deputies as they attempted to reach his son.

The three suspects are seniors from different high schools, according to Jacki Kelley, public information officer for the sheriff’s office, who announced the arrests. One goes to Ralston Valley, one to Standley Lake, and one to online school.

She stated that the suspects were apprehended in their residences, taken to the sheriff’s office on Tuesday night, and placed in jail.

“This was actually due to mobile phone device forensics and supporting information from our public,” Kelley explained.

Throughout the week-long inquiry, she received over 300 tips from the public. The three suspects face first-degree murder and extreme indifference charges concerning Bartell’s death. 

Further charges are anticipated to be brought in connection with the other rock-throwing events, according to the sheriff’s office. Their initial court appearance is set for Thursday.

According to investigators, Bartell’s vehicle was the final in a sequence of automobiles struck by giant landscaping pebbles.

The three are suspected of hurling rocks at vehicles during a crime spree last week that murdered seven people, including Bartell, who was killed when a rock flew through the windshield of her yellow Chevrolet Spark and hit her while she was chatting on the phone with a friend.

Authorities stated Wednesday that further charges are expected to be filed, pending decisions by the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

Authorities have reportedly identified a suspect vehicle, a black 2016 Chevrolet Silverado. It’s unclear who drove during last week’s rock-throwing frenzy, but Kelley says detectives think all three suspects tossed rocks.

 Alexa Bartell Murder: What Happened To Her?

According to a news release from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Alexa Bartell, 20, of Arvada, was driving northbound on Indiana Street in Jefferson County at approximately 10:45 pm.

The suspect, possibly from a vehicle or the side of the road, threw a large rock at her car, fatally striking the young woman.

According to deputies, Bartell was on the phone with a buddy when the phone fell silent. Her friend then traced her phone and traveled to the Indiana Street site. 

Deputies claimed in a press release that she discovered her dead inside her car, which was off the road in the field.

Deputies stated, “This looks like part of a nighttime crime sequence involving a light-colored pickup vehicle or SUV.”

JCSO authorities claimed they had recovered the truck and identified the owner before 3:30 pm. Thursday, roughly two hours after deputies posted photographs of the vehicle they suspected was linked to the case.

The sheriff’s office, however, stated in a 9:52 pm tweet that the “vehicle of interest” and its owner were not implicated in the string of crimes that occurred around the metro.
