Muhyiddin Yassin Scandal: Arrested And Charged For Corruption

Muhyiddin Yassin scandal drew significant media attention.

He is expected to face corruption charges on Friday concerning the suspected misappropriation of funds for his Party.

In connection with charges that building contractors paid money into the accounts of his Bersatu Party in exchange for contracts during the pandemic, Muhyiddin voluntarily appeared for questioning at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on Thursday morning.

Additionally, Azam Baki, the chief of the anti-graft agency in Malaysia, also revealed Muhyiddin Yassin, the Prime Minister during the country’s COVID-19 lockdown, is expected to be charged in court on March 10, 2023.

The agency was expected to issue a statement later in the day. On Thursday, many supporters gathered outside the agency building to support Muhyiddin, chanting slogans against Anwar Ibrahim’s government and accusing it of political persecution.

Muhyiddin exited his car and prayed with the supporters before entering the building.

In an earlier Facebook post, he denied rumors of his arrest while playing golf and stated that he was summoned to the anti-graft agency without giving any reason.

On the other hand, Muhyiddin was questioned by the MACC last month on the same project, and the MACC has also frozen Muhyiddin’s Party’s bank accounts.

The allegations against Muhyiddin come before regional elections scheduled to take place in six states by the middle of the year, with the coalition of the former premier being expected to pose a severe threat to Anwar’s alliance.

Inside Muhyiddin Yassin Career

Muhyiddin Yassin has a long political career in Malaysia.

He began his political career as an officer in the Johor Bahru City Council at the beginning of the 1970s. Further, he was a councilor there for eight years.

In 1978, he joined the United Malays National Organization (UMNO), and the following year, he won the election as a representative for Johor’s Pagoh constituency.

Yassin held several cabinet posts, including minister of youth and sports, minister of domestic trade and consumer affairs, minister of agriculture and agro-based industry, and minister of foreign trade and industry.

From 2009 to 2015, he worked as the deputy prime minister for Najib Razak’s administration.

With the fall of the Pakatan Harapan administration in February 2020, Muhyiddin was named Malaysia’s new prime minister.

Yet, political unrest plagued his administration, and he was forced to retire in August 2021 after losing his majority in parliament.

He leads a beautiful married life in addition to his professional life. He wed Noorainee Abdul Rahman, and they have four kids together.

Fakhri Yassin, one of their children, is a well-known Actor and director in Malaysia. Muhyiddin is a Muslim renowned for being a devoted adherent to the faith.
