Both her parents, Janelle “Nelle” Garcia and John Garcia, share Puerto Rican ethnicity, which has greatly influenced Mayte and her sister, Janice Garcia.

Growing up in a family that embraced Puerto Rican culture, Mayte Garcia was fully immersed in the customs, traditions, and music of her heritage.

This immersive upbringing had a profound impact on her identity and artistic journey. Inspired by her race and origins, Mayte Garcia embarked on her belly dancing journey at the tender age of three.

At just seven years old, the American native showcased her exceptional talent as the youngest professional belly dancer on the popular American television program “That’s Incredible!”

Meanwhile, during her teenage years, Garcia accomplished the position of a prima ballerina with the Wiesbaden Ballet. Additionally, she completed her education at General H.H. Arnold High School in Wiesbaden, Germany.

After a four-year courtship, Mayte Garcia and Prince married on February 14, 1996. However, their joy was overshadowed by a tragic event.

Their son, Amiir, was born on October 16, 1996, with Pfeiffer syndrome type 2, a rare genetic disorder. Unfortunately, Amiir passed away six days after birth, leaving the couple devastated.

The weight of the loss took a toll on Mayte Garcia, and she battled depression, even contemplating suicide.

Following the loss of their son, Mayte Garcia experienced a subsequent miscarriage, which further strained their marriage. Ultimately, the couple divorced in 2000, ending their tumultuous journey together.

In the years that followed, Mayte Garcia had relationships with choreographer Wade Robson from 2000 to 2001 and drummer Tommy Lee of the heavy metal band Mötley Crüe.

Lee proposed to Mayte Garcia in 2002 before a performance in Fort Wayne, Indiana, but their engagement ended in 2003.

Presently, the Puerto Rican artist resides in Las Vegas, Nevada, alongside her daughter Gia., whom she adopted in 2013.
