In September 1993, Steve Banerjee was detained and admitted to racketeering, including the planning of the assassination of De Noia.
However, just a day before he was due to receive his punishment, on October 23, 1994, Banerjee committed suicide by hanging himself in his cell.
Before his arrest, Banerjee had reportedly told an informant that he intended “to leave the country or kill himself” if caught, according to a federal prosecution in a court hearing.
Banerjee committed suicide in jail, despite no signs of suicidal intent during psychological evaluation.
