Dakar Rally co-driver Laurent Lichtleuchter tragically killed in T2 accident: Remembering a talented navigator and beloved friend.
The Frenchman, Laurent Lichtleuchter, was a highly acclaimed co-driver with an impressive track record.
Unfortunately, he passed away on Wednesday during the Morocco Desert Challenge stage due to a freak accident.
Lichtleuchter was a veteran navigator, having participated in the Dakar Rally since 2009, competing in trucks and cars.
His achievements include winning the 2015 Desafio Guarani in Argentina and the Dakar Series championship with Peter Jerie.
Additionally, he worked with Akira Miura to secure a second-place finish in their Silk Way Rally debut.
Lichtleuchter’s most notable accomplishment was winning the Dakar Rally’s T2 category for production vehicles in 2018, 2021, and 2022.
However, his illustrious career was cut short during the Morocco Desert Challenge stage.
Lichtleuchter and Patrice Garrouste’s Polaris RZR were struck by another car in the co-drivers seat at 140 km/hr due to low visibility.
The crash occurred at the 54-kilometer mark of Stage 4, resulting in Lichtleuchter’s death.
Unfortunately, when medical personnel arrived, Lichtleuchter had already passed away.

Laurent Lichtleuchter Accident- Co-driver Died In Morocco Desert Challenge
On April 26, 2023, the Dakar Rally’s T2 category saw a tragic accident resulting in the loss of the 46-year-old co-driver, Laurent Lichtleucheter.
Laurent and Patrice were competing together in the event when the incident occurred.
The visibility on the race track was extremely low due to the dust, making it difficult for the drivers to see clearly.
A competitor collided with their vehicle on the co-pilot side at high speed of 140km/hr, resulting in a massive impact that caused their car to burst into flames.
Tragically, the Frenchman, Laurent Lichtleucheter, was killed instantly.
When medical personnel arrived at the crash site by helicopter, it was too late for Lichtleucheter.
However, Patrice escaped from the burning vehicle from the passenger compartment, but he suffered from severe burns and was immediately transported to a hospital for treatment.
It is a devastating loss, and we extend our deepest condolences to Laurent’s family and friends. May his soul rest in peace, and may they find the strength to overcome this tremendous loss.
Laurent Lichtleuchter Death Reaction
The news of Laurent Lichtleuchter’s untimely death has left his family, friends, and the rally community heartbroken.
While his family has not yet issued a statement, his friends and former colleagues have expressed their condolences and shared their memories of him.
Laurent was a loving Father who left behind three beautiful children and a wife, according to the Moto mag.
He was also a talented co-driver who had made a big name in the rally community.
He participated in 15 Dakar rallies, including two victories in the T2 category, and worked with various teams such as Toyota Auto Body and other smaller teams. He was always ready for a new sporting adventure.
The owner of Laurent’s team, Xtremeplus, expressed his deep sorrow, stating that they have lost a close friend who had been a part of the Xtremeplus family for 20 years.
His former teammate, A. Miura, was left speechless by the news, saying that Laurent was like a best friend to him, and he could not believe this had happened.
Laurent Lichtleuchter’s passing has left a void in the rally community and will be deeply missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this challenging time.
