Masha Gessen is an excellent Russian-American journalist and passionate advocate for the LGBTQ+ community.

Masha Gessen is an author, translator, and activist criticizing the administration and perspectives of Vladimir Putin along with Donald Trump. 

As of 2025, Masha is 58 years old.

Gessen belongs to the non-binary and trans community and strongly supports the LGBTQ+ community.

They are also defined as “Russia’s leading LGBT rights activists.”  

As years go by and the world evolves as a whole, people have become accepting of their true identities, which helps other people to come out and clarify their identities or perspectives.

This has also helped create a more diverse and inclusive society where everyone celebrates their differences and learns from each other.  

Gessen, being an author, has authored many non-fiction books, of which “The Future Is History: How Totalitarianism Reclaimed Russia” won the National Book Award in 2017.

Surviving the criticism and brutality of the other part of the world that is against the LGBT community, Masha became the role model for herself.

Moreover, Gessen married another Russian citizen, Svetlana Generalova, who was also involved in the LGBT movement in Moscow. Sadly, the marriage didn’t last. 

Having a divorce history, Gessen found Darya and connected them, which was a successful marriage. 

Being born to a mother who was a socialist and a father who was murdered during the Holocaust in 1943, Gassen was raised to be strong, independent, and vocal about her opinions. 

Additionally, they have not revealed more information about their personal life.

They keep their personal life confidential rather than letting people comment or grab unwanted attention. 

We should remember that the nature of modern celebrity culture is to keep topics undisclosed to the public.

Acknowledging that part and accepting the importance of boundaries between public and private spheres is essential.

In January 2004, at the age of 37 years old, Masha Gessen tested positive for the BRCA1 mutation, which is an increased rate of ovarian or breast cancer. 

The BRAC1 gene mutation rated over 40% – 50% for ovarian cancer and 87% for breast cancer for Gessen.

The book titled “Blood Matter: From Inherited Illness to Designer Babies, How the World and I Found Ourselves in the Future of the Gene.” was written by Gessen.

They took the reader to the experience of genetic testing and the pros and cons it had in their life. 

Although Gessen was somewhat put down by the news of her gene mutation risking her to high cancer, they adopted a son named Vova from an orphanage for HIV-positive women in Kaliningrad, born in Russia, in 1997.

Out of three children, their daughter, Yolka, was born in the U.S. in 2001. 

Likewise, their third child, whose name is yet to be disclosed, was born in February 2012. 

As per the available resources, there is no further information on their children. 

In continuation of Gassen’s support to the LGBT community, the world is more compassionate and tolerant.

They bring their true identities to the world, making people comfortable and aware of their self-confidence.
