He graduated from Germantown High School after attending the Southern Baptist Educational Center. He decided to pursue acting at 17 and desired to be a theater performer.

He earned a B.F.A. in Drama from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. After graduation, he relocated to Houston, Texas, to participate in an apprentice acting program at the Alley Theatre for a season but was not called back to join the Company.

He had had enough of performing and returned to his hometown to teach high school for a year.
