According to sources, a female soldier died earlier this week at Fort Hood, the same Army station in Texas where Vanessa Guillén was murdered three years ago.
According to the 1st Cavalry Division, Pvt. Ana Basaldua Ruiz, a combat engineer, died on Monday. The reason for death was not specified in the announcement.
The Army Criminal Investigation Division is looking into “the facts and circumstances surrounding her death,” according to the statement. According to Fort Hood, “foul play” has not been indicated thus far.

Ana Basalduaruiz, a 21-year-old combat engineer at Fort Hood, Texas, died due to sexual harassment and abuse in the military.
Basalduaruiz was discovered dead on March 13, 2023, after previously reporting sexual harassment. While no foul play has been established yet, her death has aroused further anger and cries for action.

The deaths of Basalduaruiz and Guillén have revived concerns about the military’s handling of sexual harassment and assault charges, as well as the need for improved service member protections.
Her Father, Ubaldo Basaldua of Belmont Heights, feels she was sexually harassed. Basaldua Ruiz had been with the division for 15 months.

Authorities did not say how she died, but they did say an inquiry into the circumstances is underway.
According to the base, the chain of command contacts Basaldua Ruiz’s family and offers assistance and resources to her family and others who worked with her.
“We are very saddened by the loss of PV2 Ana Basaldua Ruiz, and we express our condolences to her Father, mother, and sister,” Lt. Col. Patrick Sullivan, commander of the 91st Engineer Battalion, said. “At this difficult moment, our thoughts and prayers are with them. She was a fantastic colleague who will be sorely missed.”

The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) staged a news conference Friday at Fort Hood’s main gate, requesting that the FBI investigate Basaldua Ruiz’s death.
According to LULAC leaders, the soldier’s parents complained about continuous sexual harassment by other service personnel, including one of her superiors.
